Spring break starts Monday for District 205 and students have the day off tomorrow. When classes resume April 4, Silas Willard students and teachers will be in a brand new building.
It’s a bitter-sweet change for some teachers.
Ann Seibert has been teaching at Silas for 30 years. The kindergarten teacher tells WGIL her parents attended the school, she attended the school and so did her children.
“I am really in love with this building,” Seibert says, “just the idea of how it affected all of our lives and we all got to go through the same halls years apart. That’s three generations of my family. My parents met here. It’s just been a hard day for me to know its my last day in the building because it is such a part of my life.”
Fifth grade teacher Michael Rux says he has spent his 27-year teaching career at Silas.
“I’ve grown as a teacher in this building,” he says. “There’s a lot of good memories here. We’ve had a lot of good people that have worked here, so it’s a little bit sad that today’s our last day here here.”
Silas Willard was built in 1912. An open house for both old and new buildings is set for 9 a.m. April 2. Demolition on the old building is expected in the summer.
