Fatal accidents on Christmas Eve

Two individuals have died following two separate, and unrelated motor vehicle accidents on area roads.

At around 1:45 p.m. on Sunday The Illinois State Police, Geneseo Police Department, Geneseo Fire Department, Geneseo Ambulance, Henry County Sheriff’s Office and the Henry County Coroner’s Office all responded to the scene of a crash involving a Ford Explorer and a tractor semi trailer.

According to the ISP, both vehicles were traveling eastbound on I-80 near milepost 19 when the Explorer lost control and spun. The Volvo Semi struck the drivers side door of the Explorer.

The driver of the Volvo was not injured, but the driver of the Explorer was and transported to an area hospital. A passenger in the Ford Explorer were pronounced dead on the scene. Additionally a dog, presumably in the Explorer, was killed in the crash.

The investigation is ongoing in the matter.

A second accident that occurred on Sunday at around 4:08 p.m. involved a 2013 Chevrolet Malibu, and a 2017 Dodge Caravan in Warren County near Kirkwood.

According to a release from the ISP, an eye witness says that the Malibu was westbound on U.S. 34 when it crossed the center line and collided head on with the Caravan.

The driver of the Malibu – 22-year-old Alma E. Perez of Wapello, Iowa – and a three-year-old child in the Malibu were transported to Great River Medical Center and later University of Iowa Hospitals. The driver of the Caravan, 44-year-old Yvonne T. Villarreal of Knoxville, was transported to OSF in Monmouth, and later OSF in Peoria.

Perez would later die due to her injuries at the University of Iowa Hospital on Monday.

Assisting on the scene of the second accident was Warren County Sheriff’s Office, Central Warren Fire, Cameron Fire, Little York Fire, Roseville Fire, Berg’s Towing, and GHAS.
