Thurman, John R.

John R. Thurman, age 75 of Hermon, died at 4:06 pm Thursday, January 30, 2014 at his home surrounded by his loving family.

He was born on July 20, 1938 in Avon, the son of Theodore “Ted” “Tobe” and Jennie P. (Hoadley) Thurman. He married Connie McGrew. They later divorced. He then married Diane L. Weathers on May 18, 1974 in Abingdon.

John R. is survived by his wife, Diane; his children, Diana (Tim Peacock) Thurman of RR Abingdon, Suzanne Magee of Alexis and Michael J. (Trish Butler) Thurman of RR Abingdon; three granddaughters, Catherine (Dakota Pullen) Magee, Jennifer (Jake) Medhurst and Sarah Magee; one step-son, Michael (Georgia) Stubbs of Moline; two step-grandchildren, Ty Stubbs and Chase Stubbs; one brother, Max (Anna) Thurman of Galesburg; one sister, Karon (Bill) Dawson of Knoxville; nieces and nephews and their families; and his loving cats, Ivan and Abby.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a son-in-law, Mike Magee.

He graduated from Abingdon High School in 1956. He worked at the Alton Box Factory in Galesburg for 44 years, retiring as a supervisor. He also farmed and raised livestock. He was a member of the Abingdon-Avon FFA Foundation; the Illinois Cattleman�s Association, the Abingdon Community Festival Association and was a founding member of the former Abingdon Motorcycle Club. His hobbies included playing cards, playing fast pitch softball, and spending time with family and friends and especially giving them all a hard time.

Funeral service will be held at 11:00 am Tuesday, February 4, 2014 at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel. Mrs. Eleanor Landon will officiate. Burial will follow in the Abingdon Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm Monday at the chapel.
