Several area companies received funds from the City of Galesburg to hire consultants in an effort to help grow their businesses.
Aldermen unanimously approved grants of nearly 100-thousand dollars for the four companies. The Consultant Services funding comes from a federal Economic Development Administration grant of 1.2-million dollars the City received in 2010 for enhancing sustainability and entrepreneurship. Several companies are using the funds to assist in the development of a new website, while others are more interested in accounting services or employee training.
City Economic Development Director Cesar Suarez says any business that’s interested in starting-up or growing can receive grants.
“They can select who the consultant is and we can be able to reimburse them, so depending on the total dollar value of that we’re able to go to council, the city manager’s able to approve them under 5,000, under 10,000 through a big grant anything about 10,000 goes before the City Council.”
Gates Corporation, the new Iron Spike Brewing Company, Office Specialists, and Railway Pictures Studios all received funds.
The City has until March to deliver money allocated through the EDA grant. Aldermen considered last night the possibility of holding a special meeting to ensure all of the funds are delivered.
Remaining funds must be returned to the federal government.
