Aubrey Estelle ShermanAudrey Estelle Sherman, age 90 of Abingdon, died at 2:00 am Monday, February 3, 2014 at the home of her son Mark, surrounded by her loving sons and their wives.

She was born on September 11, 1923 at the home of her parent’s, Lloyd and Ruth (Alexander) Cutler, in Avon. She married Ralph Howerter in 1941 in Kahoka, Missouri. They later divorced. She then married Clarke Sherman on May 21, 1971 in Abingdon. He preceded her in death on November 3, 2011. She was also preceded in death by her parents and a stillborn infant son, Lloyd Edward Howerter.

Audrey is survived by two sons, Marcus Edgar (and Cindy) Howerter of RR Monmouth and James Joseph (and Mary Anne) Howerter of Abingdon; four grandchildren, Lucas (and Jeongmi) Howerter of S. Korea, Josh (and Eunijin) Howerter of Dubuque, Iowa, Sarah (and Josiah) Martinson of Galesburg and Hannah Howerter of Galesburg; and seven great-grandchildren (and another on the way); one step-son, Rodney C. (and Martha) Sherman of Florida; one step-grandson, Todd (and Dennise) Sherman; a step-granddaughter, Kelly (and Tim) Storck; and twin step-great-granddaughters.

She graduated from Abingdon High School in 1941 and later from Brown’s Business College in Galesburg. She worked at Briggs Manufacturing in Abingdon for 46 years, retiring as the Certified Purchasing Manager in 1988.

Audrey was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Abingdon where she was involved in the many activities at the church. She was a member of the AHS Half-Century Alumni and the Abingdon Pottery Collectors Club. Her hobbies included flower arranging, gardening, dancing and taking photos. She wrote for the Abingdon Argus and also taught Dale Carnegie Classes. She was also active in the Rotary Ann’s and she helped organize and attended the reunions for the 35th Division of the Army. She loved spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Cremation will be accorded. Memorial service will be held at 11:00 am Thursday, February 6, 2014 at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel. Rev. M. Annette Faull, Mrs. Eleanor Landon and her son, Mark Howerter will officiate. Burial of Audrey’s ashes will be in the Abingdon Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 10:00 am to 11:00 am Thursday at the chapel.
