We may only be one and a half months into 2014, but the Knox County Tourism Council is happy with how the year is shaping up.
Thanks to the Junior Streaks boys and girls basketball tournament, Tourism Director Bill Morris says hotels around town have seen a major increase in room sales by almost three-hundred rooms over this time last year.
The Discovery Depot has also seen an increase in their attendance, something Discovery Depot Executive Director, Denise Bradburn says she expects will grow.
Morris says the use of social media such as Facebook and Twitter is great, but there a other ways to introduce Galesburg to people.
“There’s more that we can do,” Morris said. “We can utilize video content on YouTube. YouTube is the number two search engine behind Google in the world. So, if we continue — if I continue — or if other destinations and events continue to provide video content, give it to me. I can share it. And they can share it themselves; just give me the link so we can continually partner in sharing information.”
Morris explained he’s been able to increase the number of likes on their Facebook page from around 300 to around 700.
He also explained things such as added signage displaying City attractions along the interstate would be another great way to attract attention.
