Most of the area girls regional basketball tournaments are off tonight ahead of tomorrow’s championship games, but there is one location where the semifinals are yet to be played. That’s at Kewanee Wethersfield, where the Lady Spartans of Ridgewood will play Stark County. The two teams have split a pair of games in recent weeks, and tonight’s winner will likely get a shot at top-rated Annawan in the championship.
The Galesburg girls have one more practice ahead of tomorrow night’s regular season finale, when they travel to East Moline to play the United Township Panthers. The girls will be trying to even their Western Big 6 record at 5-5, and will then turn their attention to next week’s regional tournament game with Alleman.
After a full schedule of boys basketball games around the area last night, all we have tonight are a few make-up games. One of those has Knoxville traveling to South Fulton. The Blue Bullets are coming off of last nights’ 65-62 win over Farmington. Also tonight, Ridgewood will play at West Prairie. The Spartans topped Stark County last evening 43-41.
The Galesburg freshmen boys will play Dunlap tonight at 6:30 at Thiel Gym. The game was originally scheduled for tomorrow night, but has been moved up.
Local boxing coach Carlos Duncan reports that the long wait is over for Galesburg middleweight George Carter, Jr. Carter has signed a four-year professional contract with Chicago Fight Clubs, which will provide him with training expenses and a minimum of three fights per year. Duncan reports that the deal also should allow Carter to get quality sparring partners, and if he does well, to get ranked. The 27-year-old Carter is undefeated so far in his professional career.
