Knox County Increases Road Salt Reserves

WGIL Newsroom . Local News 262

Knox County SealKnox County Highway road crews have been kept consistently busy this winter with evenly spaced snowfall.

In January, crews were working to clear roads for 21 of 31 days. February has, so far, not shaped up to be any less cumbersome with 9 days spent plowing or salting roads.

Because of this winter’s snowfall totals, the County Highway Department has had to order additional road salt late in the season.

Knox County Highway Administrator Duane Ratermann tells WGIL the snowy weather has been a bit of an issue this year, but it’s common to reorder road salt.

“Because it’s been so severely cold, we’ve actually been able to cut back on our salt application, knowing that it was not going to be effective anyway,” Ratermann said.  “We’ve used, roughly, 1,500 ton[s] of salt this winter.  We typically budget for about 2,000 ton[s].”

Ratterman says with snow in the forecast this weekend, his department is glad 400 extra tons of salt should be delivered soon after a three week wait.

Overtime costs since December have cost Knox County more than $21,000 just to clear the roads.
