Illini Coach No Fan of Proposed Slow-Down Rule

illiniCHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) — Illinois head coach Tim Beckman’s background is in defense but he’s no fan of a proposed NCAA rule change designed to slow offenses.

Beckman said Thursday that he hadn’t looked at the new proposal in detail. But he says he’s opposed to potentially excessive regulation that he believes could distort the game.

The change from the NCAA rules committee would require offenses to let at least 10 seconds run off the 40-second play clock before they snap the ball. The committee said the rule would be intended to keep players safer. The change still needs the approval of an oversight panel.

Beckman doesn’t believe the faster pace of play is a threat.

The Illini are among the many college football teams that play up-tempo offenses.
