Griffith, Raymond Morris

Raymond Morris Griffith 81, of Galesburg, died at 6:39 p.m. Thursday, February 13, 2014 at Galesburg Cottage Hospital surrounded by his family.He was born April 21, 1932 in Galesburg the son of Chester and Gladys (Morris) Griffith. He married Carolyn Mathers on July 27, 1952 in Galesburg.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn of nearly 62 years; a son, Jeffrey A. (and Judy) Griffith of Brighton, Colo.; two daughters, Jill D. (and Larry) Carr of Hampton, Ill. and Jody L. LaFollette (and John Chezum) of Galesburg; two grandchildren, Dustin (and Jessica) Griffith and Chad (and Chelsea) Griffith; three great grandchildren, Emerson Virginia, Marlowe Rae, and Baby Griff; a step granddaughter, Jennifer (and James) Neff; two step great grandchildren, Chase James and Gage Mitchell; and two brothers, Lawrence Griffith and Harold Griffith, both of Galesburg. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Ray worked for the United States Postal Service for 41 years as a carrier and in vehicle maintenance. He retired November 3, 1997. He was born and raised in Galesburg, graduating from Galesburg High School in 1950. He lived his entire life here. Ray was a member of Central Congregational Church, where he served on the Boards of Deacons, Trustees, Benevolence, and Usher. He was a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers Branch 88 and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees Chapter 495.
Ray served in the United States Army for two years during the Korean War. He was a member of Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post 285.
Ray loved spending time with his family and friends.
Celebration of Ray’s life will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, February 18, 2014 at Central Congregational Church. Rev. James Ecklund will officiate. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Chapel. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Central Congregational Church.
