City Council Likely to Adopt EAB Updates

WGIL Newsroom . Local News 199

It may be a few years before the County’s Emerald Ash Borer infestation is resolved.
A 25-year plan adopted by the Galesburg City Council last year hopes to continue the process of fighting the infestation.4% of the trees in Galesburg City parks are ash trees and five times that amount are situated along city streets.
Without action, the City of Galesburg could lose more than 600 publicly owned ash trees.
Updates to the plan were developed by the City’s Tree Commission recently and the City Council will consider implementing the changes.
The discovery of the Emerald Ash Borer in the County was located by crews at Knox College who confirmed the finding with the USDA.
The USDA recommends removing all of the ash trees in an infected area to prevent the spread of the EAB, but certain other trees will be sprayed with insecticide.
Nonetheless, the City of Galesburg is still operating an Oak Tree giveaway program that hopes to incentivize residents to take proactive steps.
Tonight’s meeting begins at 6:30 at Galesburg City Hall.
