Vangunten, David L., Sr.

David L. Vangunten, Sr., 89, of Wataga, Ill. died at 2:53AM Monday, February 24, 2014 in Seminary Manor, Galesburg.

He was born on July 1, 1924 in Cleveland Ohio to Verl David and Elsie Waltermire Vangunten.  He first married Frances Jeanette Hook who preceded him in death.  He then married Claire McCormick in Peoria, Ill. on February 14, 1987.  She survives.

Also surviving are four children, David and Barb Vangunten, Jr., Anita Young, both of Peoria, Laurel Silva of Hawaii and Carol Poole of Florida; a brother, Richard and Marcy Vangunten; nine grandchildren; and 25 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife and the mother of his children, Frances.

He served in the US Navy during World War II aboard the submarine USS 295 Hackleback.

He retired from Caterpillar as a Patent Engineer Analyst.  He loved horseshoes, boating, hunting with his trained Labradors, going to Hy-Vee to share his political and religious views with his friends.  And most of all he cherished being the master treater of his dog Carly that he loved so – he told her every day she is what made him keep going near the end of his battle with ailments, cancer and surgeries.

Funeral services will be 1:30 PM Friday, February 28, 2014 in the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel with Joshua, Jed and Jacob Strom, nephews of David Vangunten, officiating.  Visitation will be from 12:00 PM to 1:30 PM Friday at the Chapel.  Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Galesburg.  Military honors will be provided by the Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post #285 Honor Guard.   Memorials may be made to the family.
