Quinn Broaches Ukraine in Pulaski Day Remarks

WGIL Newsroom . State News 244

QuinnCHICAGO (AP) — Gov. Pat Quinn has taken the opportunity to highlight the crisis in Ukraine as he marked a Polish-born soldier’s contribution to American independence.

In comments released by his office Monday on Casimir Pulaski Day, Quinn said the Revolutionary War hero should remind people about the “importance of freedom.” He also mentioned “tumultuous times” in Ukraine and called for a peaceful resolution of the conflict.

Russian troops invaded the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea over the weekend and tensions remain high in the Eastern European nation.

Casimir Pulaski fought in the American Revolution and died following a battle in 1779.

With its large Polish population, Illinois has long honored Pulaski. In additional to the annual Casimir Pulaski Day, one of Chicago’s longest streets is named after him, as is an Illinois county.
