The Western Big 6 All-Conference team has been announced for boys basketball. Galesburg junior Grant Gibson and sophomore Ethan Meeker were selected for the 10-member team. Joining the pair of Silver Streaks from elsewhere around the league were: Rock Island’s C.J. Carr, Keenan Shorter, Trey Sigel, and Tyler Hall; Moline’s Brandon Vice and Tyler Biscontine; Quincy’s Zach Burry; and Lamont Mitchell from United Township. Galesburg senior Tyson Parks IV received honorable mention.
While the Silver Streaks boys season is over, the team that topped the Silver Streaks on Friday night will play again tomorrow evening. The Dunlap Eagles will play Peoria Notre Dame in a sectional semifinal at the Renaissance Arena on the Bradley University campus. The sectional is wide open this year, as none of the top-seeded teams advanced out of last week’s regionals.
Former Silver Streak Victor Davis is seeing his college career continue at Illinois Wesleyan University. That’s because the Titans stayed alive in the NCAA Division III Tournament over the weekend. The Titans defeated Midwest Conference champion St. Norbert 84-68 at the Shirk Center in Bloomington. The setback ended a 23-game winning streak for St. Norbert, and propelled Illinois Wesleyan into the “Sweet 16.” Davis, a senior post player for the Titans, added 11 points to the cause in Saturday’s win.
The Carl Sandburg Chargers will be practicing while they await an assignment to the Division II Junior College National Tournament. The Chargers qualified for the event for the first time in school history over the weekend, as they defeated Olive Harvey 73-69 in the Region IV championship game in Elgin. The date, time and opponent have yet to be determined for the Chargers, but the first day of play is next Tuesday, March 18th in Danville, IL.
