A program run through the Knox County YMCA, and supported by District 205 and the Galesburg Community Foundation, is working to help Galesburg youth in a number of different ways.
The YMCA Solutions program started the first of the year and despite the program being new, Solutions Program Director John Sibley, Jr. says he’s been able to make some great connections.
The program allows Sibley to go into the schools to work with at risk students. When schools over students have the option to attend an after school program.
Sibley tells WGIL’s Galesburg Live it was clear before the program came to be, something needed to be done to help our youth.
“The YMCA, in many respects, is the last best defense when it comes to our kids,” says Sibley. “We don’t have a lot for our kids to do, for whatever reason, but the YMCA has been stalwart in this and has been here since I was a kid, I love the YMCA and I think kids now love the YMCA.”
Sibley says at first they weren’t sure just how students would respond to the program.
He says currently they have more than 60 students participating.
