Carlson, Robert James

Robert James “Bob” “Jim” Carlson, 80, of Galesburg, died at 12:29 a.m. Wednesday, March 12, 2014 in Galesburg Cottage Hospital.

He was born April 17, 1933 in Chicago.  He was the son of Martin L. and Edna Elvira (Sundberg) Carlson.  He married Akiko Tanaka in 1956 in Tokyo, Japan.

He is survived by two children, Charlotte Vancil of Gilson and David Carlson of Galesburg and four grandchildren, Elizabeth Carlson, Drew Carlson, Colton Vancil, and Carsen Vancil.  He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Robert Jr. and Steven; and a grandson, David Adam Carlson.

He graduated from Galesburg High School in 1952 and entered the United States Air Force.  He earned an associate’s degree in electronics.  After being discharged from the Air Force, he was a Golden Rule Insurance agent for several years.  He then owned and operated Carlson Garage Doors for many years before retiring.  He lived most of his life in Galesburg.

He was a member of Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post 285 and enjoyed fishing and hunting.

Graveside service will be 1 p.m. Friday, March 14, 2014 in Henderson Cemetery.  Family and friends are invited to a celebration of life from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Friday at C.R.’s Smokehouse/former Moose Lodge.  Memorials may be made to the family.  Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel is handling arrangements.  Online condolences may be made at www.h-p-w.com.
