Winkler, Dorothy Ellen

Dorothy Ellen Winkler, age 92, of Washington, Missouri, formerly of Dahinda, died peacefully on March 12, 2014.

She was born in Logansport, IN on January 18th 1922 to Harry and Harriet White joining her brother Jack in their family. In 1942 she married August (Gus) Winkler. Immediately after their wedding Gus left to serve in the Air Force during World War II. During that time Dorothy volunteered as a nurses’ aid, thus also serving the war effort. After 4 long years, Gus returned and they started their family, first with William (Bill) and then Janice.

Gus and Dorothy opened their hearts and their homes to family, friends, and strangers alike, sharing their love of life, and their love of their Lord.

Dorothy was an avid seamstress and needle worker. Her quilts and wall hangings can be seen gracing her children’s homes. She was also an avid gardener. She canned and freeze her produce and they composted before it was popular. She loved birding and all things natural.

Dorothy and Gus welcomed their children’s spouses, Carol (Bill) and Paul (Janice), and treated them as their own children. Dorothy loved her grandchildren, Nathan and David (Bill and Carol) and Peter, Tim, Mary, and Debbie (Janice and Paul) and her joy in them created a lifelong bond between grandmother and each grandchild. Her legacy is her families’ joy in worshipping, working, and playing together.

Her parents, her brother, and her loving husband Gus (1987) preceded Dorothy in death.
