Bayles, Clifford O.

Clifford O. Bayles, 84, of Galesburg, died peacefully at 2:20 p.m. Sunday, March 16, 2014 in Heartland Health Care Center.

He was born December 3, 1929 in Zenia, Ill. the son of Ollie and Sarah Catherine (Rush) Bayles.  He married Norma J. Heinsman on October 2, 1949 in Peoria, Ill.

He is survived by his wife, Norma, of 64 years; a son, Darrell O. (and Donya) Bayles of Ankeny, Iowa; a daughter, Diane Jean Wall of Bradford, Ill.; three grandchildren, Lindsey N. Bayles, Alexis E. Bayles, and Savannah N. Wall; and two sisters, Jeannette Williams of East Peoria, Ill. and Loraine Decker of West Bend, Wis.  He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Bernard Bayles; sisters, Louise Stanford, Bernice Meyers, and Faye Decker; and a grandson, Andrew Timothy Wall on December 7, 2012.

Clifford worked first as a business machine repairman for Burroughs Corporation and then was a union carpenter for 40 years.  Clifford enjoyed using his carpentry skills, both as a profession and a hobby, and taught carpenter apprenticeship classes at Carl Sandburg College.  He was an active member of Harmony Baptist Church in Galesburg.  Clifford was well liked and was known for his sense of humor.

He served in the United States Army from 1950 to 1952.  He was stationed in Germany for one year and at Ft. Leonard Wood for one year.

Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 21, 2014 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel.  Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Harmony Baptist Church.  Pastor Chris Nissley will officiate.  Burial will be in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens.  Memorials may be made to Harmony Baptist Church or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.  Online condolences may be made at www.h-p-w.com.
