Home Games in Question for GHS Spring Sports

WGIL Newsroom . Local News, Local Sports 253

Galesburg Silver StreaksSome of the Galesburg High School Silver Streaks spring sports were hoping to do at least some work at home this season despite ongoing Master Facilities Plan work, but that’s looking more and more to be not the case.

It was already known that the GHS track team wouldn’t be at home this year because of ongoing construction of the new football and track fields, but GHS Athletic Director Ralph Henning says even practice is a problem because of the harsh winter we’ve had.

Henning tells the WGIL Morning News the ground is just too hard well below the surface for Russell Construction to even put up safety fencing.

“[Recently], they went out to try and do that, and they’re trying,” Henning said.  “Russell does a great job.  They work with us so well.  They went down about three inches, and it was like hitting rock.  So, they’ve got some alternate plans, and I think they’re going to get something worked out so that our kids can go out and use it.  Later this spring, our P.E. classes will go out there, and they’ll walk and jog and things like that — the normal things that they do.”

Despite not having a home field, Henning says the Streaks will host two home track meets this year at Knox College. Indoor meets are being held at Knox and Monmouth College.

As far as baseball and softball goes, Henning says not even Sundberg Field will be ready to go for baseball until at least the end of April. He says the sophomore field will be able to be used as soon as possible.
