Hanna, Helen Catherine

Helen Catherine Hanna, 89, of Kewanee formerly of Galesburg, died at 5:56 p.m. Monday, March 31, 2014 at Kewanee Care, Kewanee, IL.

Helen was born on July 20, 1924 in Monmouth, IL, the daughter of Roy and Rose M. (Gavin) Thompson.  She married Paul E. Hanna on February 9, 1963 in Monmouth.  Paul preceded her in death on February 5, 2010.  Helen is survived by one daughter, Mary (Paul) Alepra of Kewanee; and two grandchildren, Madeline and David Alepra both of Kewanee.  Helen is also survived by four sisters, Margaret Ray of Monmouth, Martha Driscoll of Monmouth, Florence (Francis) Kane of Roseville, and Grace Dollinger of Metamora.  Helen was preceded in death by her husband and four brothers, Lawrence, William, Robert, and Harold Thompson.

Helen was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Kewanee, and a former member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Galesburg.  She was a member and past president of the Immaculata Guild.  Prior to her marriage to Paul, Helen worked as a secretary for ALCOA.  She then became a homemaker for many years.  She eventually returned to work, working at the snack bar at Cottage Hospital, Bergner’s Department store and helping the elderly.

Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Friday, April 4, 2014 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Galesburg, Rev. Msgr. Ernest Pizzamiglio will officiate.  Burial will follow in Alexis Cemetery, Alexis.  Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 3, 2014 at Watson-Thomas Funeral Home and Crematory, Galesburg, with the rosary being prayed at 8 p.m.   Memorials may be made to the Wethersfield Academic Foundation.
