Chilton, Winifred Wennerstrand

Winifred Wennerstrand Chilton, 86, of Galesburg, Ill., died at 1:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 2, 2014 at home.

She was born March 21, 1928 at Bremerton, Wash., the daughter of David E. Wennerstrand and Winifred J. Dougherty.  She grew up in Chicago, Ill. and was a graduate of Austin High School.  She received a B.S. in Education from Northern Illinois University, DeKalb, Ill. in 1947.  She received a M.A. in Education from Northwestern University, Evanston, Ill. in 1949.

She married William L. Giles on June 11, 1947 in DeKalb, Ill.  She married Gilmore E. Chilton on August 22, 1977 at Orange City, Fla.  Gil Chilton died on March 13, 1987.

She taught school in St. Joseph, Mo. and was a string bass teacher privately and at Knox College.  She was a secretary at the University of Illinois College of Medicine, at DeKalb AgResearch, and at Continental Telephone Company.  She played string bass with the Peoria Symphony Orchestra, Knox-Galesburg Symphony, Rockford Symphony, Tri-Cities Symphony, and Quincy Symphony.

She was a member of Chapter NK P.E.O., Order of the Eastern Star, Bishop Hill Vasa Lodge, International Society of String Bassists, and Central Congregational Church.

Survivors include four sons, Kenneth P. Giles of Washington, D.C., Dr. Steven A. Giles of Waukesha, Wis., Richard C. Giles of Galesburg, Ill., and David G. Giles of Philadelphia, Penn.; a half-sister, Kathryn Renkosik of Normal, Ill.; and five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Cremation was accorded and burial will be at Fairview Cemetery in DeKalb, Illinois.  A memorial program will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 12, 2014 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Peoria Symphony Orchestra or Knox-Galesburg Symphony.  Online condolences may be made at www.h-p-w.com.
