The board has called a special session tonight that will have a closed-door session to discuss private meeting minutes, but they will later convene into open session to talk about Silas Willard Elementary School. During a recent meeting of the District-205 Board’s Building Committee, members learned that the state is pushing for something to be done with the aging school sooner rather than later. Silas has a number of problems that the state considers to be code violations.
The state wants the district to start work on the school as soon as possible, or build the new school that board members already approved. That work has all been ground to a halt because of cost concerns — expected to exceed 15 million dollars or more.
The state wants accessibility to the old school to be improved soon, or they want the new school.
The District-205 building committee was to discuss the matter again this week, but it’s possible the board could push for action tonight.
The Galesburg School Board meeting is at five o’clock at Lincoln School.
