Railroad Days Making A Change

WGIL Newsroom . Local News 243

An annual summer event in Galesburg could be making a move back to Main Street.

Railroad Days – which is estimated to attract around 5-thousand visitors this year – has, for the last 10 years, located its festivities on East Simmons Street.

An application filed with the City of Galesburg not only wanted to hold Railroad Days on Main Street, but would subsequently close off portions of the street for several days.

The change is hoping to draw larger crowds this year and Railroad Days Committee Co-Chair Dennis Clark tells WGIL people have been asking for the change for a number of years.

“We put out questionnaires and we got a lot of responses like ‘why isn’t it back on Main Street’ and originally when it left Main Street, some of the merchants wanted it off Main Street to another location,” says Clark.

The Galesburg City Council approved the application during this week’s meeting, unanimously.

Sixth Ward Alderman Wayne Allen says the event puts Galesburg on the map and encourages visitors to spend money in the community. Clark says that since the announcement, many groups are stepping forward to provide services or entertainment.

“It’s great to have some of these other activities go to Main Street and bring some of that back, but we need to emphasize that Railroad Days really surrounds the railroad and that’s the main emphasis of the festival,” says Clark.

This year’s event will be held in June.
