Galesburg Police received a report of the accident around 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
Officers were able to respond sufficiently fast to locate the suspect vehicle near the cemetery. Police attempted to initiate a traffic stop, but the vehicle allegedly fled the scene from Linwood Road toward Main Street.
As the vehicle was travelling down eastbound on Main Street, spike-strips were used, damaging tires on the vehicle.
An official report has not been released, but sources have been mixed on whether the tires were damaged in the accident or were damaged by the spike strips.
The driver, identified as 54-year old Thomas Dudman, did not exceed 30 mph during the course of the chase – which led police vehicles into downtown Galesburg. Officers were able to apprehend the suspect in the 100 block of South Cherry Street. Dudman was being observed at an area hospital following the incident.
No injuries were reported in Wednesday’s incident.
Charges are pending in the case.
