UPDATE 3:15 PM 4/15/14 An early morning fire a week ago in the 400-block of South Academy street was no accident.

An investigation into the cause has led Galesburg Fire and Police officials to believe the fire was an act of arson. Fire Investigator Brock Schmitt says there was no evidence someone was squatting in the vacant home and accidentally started the fire.

Schmitt tells WGIL that their preliminary investigation found no other cause of the fire, and evidence was found to support an arson theory.

“We did have the State Fire Marshall’s office bring a K-9 dog in and we did run the K-9 through there and we did have positive hits inside the structure for some type of accelerant,” says Schmitt.

Schmitt says samples were sent out for testing, but he says outside of signs an accelerant was used, the fire burn patterns led investigators to conclude the fire was intentionally set.

The Galesburg Fire and Police Department are asking anyone who may have seen anything around the time of the April 8th fire to come forward.

You can call the Galesburg area Crime Stoppers or either the police or fire department.
