Individual Computing Comes to District 205

WGIL Newsroom . Local News 293

205logobwGalesburg students will now have access to their own computers after a decision last night by the Board of Education.

The district has been working for some time to purchase the laptops and implement the 1-to-1 computing program.

With a price tag exceeding $1 million, District 205 is hoping to furnish Chromebooks for nearly every student.

Several district representatives toured a school in Chicago to observe how they utilize the devices in their classroom.

Board President Tom Colclasure says this a great move for the district.

“It’s the new way to educate kids,” Coclasure said.  “It’s multi-dimensional.  I was very impressed.  There were kids there in the high school [that I toured] that were earning tech certificates, from doing the work themselves on the machines that had problems.”

The district is expected to refresh the computers every three years – a similar expense to textbooks.

The Board of Education also approved a resolution issuing $12 million in bonds for the construction of a new Silas Willard Elementary School.
