The Galesburg Area Crime Stoppers honored Galesburg Officer Lane Mings with their 2013 Officer of the Year Award.

Officer Mings is one of the officers who conducts daily interdictions at the Amtrak Station with his K9 Ajax.

Mings credited Galesburg Police Chief David Christensen for being open to the interdiction program.

“It’s a great honor and I really do appreciate it,” says Mings.  “The chief allowing us to do what we do on the interdiction line, it’s something new and different that a lot of people don’t understand at first, but (he) gave it a chance.  We have been successful at it and we appreciate it.”

The interdiction program is conducted at the Galesburg AMTRAK station, UPS, on the highway and at the local bus service.

Since the introduction of the program, Mings and his canine partners have been responsible for the seizure of 125 pounds of Cannabis.

They also have seized 200 hundred thousand dollars, 1.1 pounds of heroin and various other drugs.

Mings will also be receiving an award from the interdiction school in Murfreesboro Tennessee.

The award is for his former K9 Ares, who has since passed away.
