Galesburg’s Native Son Comes Home

WGIL Newsroom . Local News 310

4-23-14 Sandburg StatueIt was a day of celebration in Galesburg as the long-awaited Carl Sandburg Statue was finally unveiled.
The nine-foot tall bronze statue of Sandburg carrying his guitar and books, and accompanied by his Nubian goat Nellie made its way down Main Street escorted by Galesburg Police and Fire. A celebratory day meant a chance for residents to come out and see the statue move down Main Street to its temporary home: the former Ameren building on Broad Street.
Resident Christina Diaz and her five year old son went out in the rain to catch a glimpse of the statue and she tells WGIL she wanted her son to see how Galesburg embraces Carl Sandburg, because he’s an important figure in Galesburg and Illinois.

“He’s brought a lot of literature, history, he brought a lot of attention to Galesburg as well,  but he’s famous in his own right. He’s done a lot of wonderful work of course being a biographer for Abraham Lincoln. He, I just think he’s a great American Icon.”

Diaz says she wishes more people would have come out to support the parade and the unveiling of the statue, but she says the rain didn’t help.
She says when the statue is placed in the public square it will bring new life to the square, and should bring in more tourism for the city.
