Gibson, Mary M.

Mary M. Gibson, 91, of Monmouth, passed away at 5:35 a.m., Wednesday, April 23, 2014 at the Monmouth Nursing Home.

She was born May 2, 1922 in Warren County, Illinois the daughter of Harry C. and Chloe (Gallaugher) McConnell, She was raised and educated in Warren County attending McGaw Grade School and graduating from Monmouth High School in 1940.

Mary married John W. “Hoot” Gibson at her family home in Warren County on Oct. 7, 1943 and he died March 27, 2008.

Mary was a devoted mother and as her children grew older she worked for Cavanaugh Bus Service as a school bus driver in the Warren School District for 8 years.  She was also a homemaker and later worked as the Warren County Deputy Circuit Clerk for 20 years before retiring in 1984.  She worked for a short time as a secretary at Banker’s Life Co. and the 2nd Mayo General Hospital in Knox County.

She was a member of the Faith Presbyterian Church in Monmouth and a charter member of the Monmouth VFW Auxiliary.

Survivors include her 4 children, Ann (John) Gillen of Monmouth, John M. (Linda) Gibson of Rockford, IL, Scott (Karen) Gibson of Little York and Jane Newberry of Monmouth; 9 grandchildren, Andrea (Curt) Crum, Katie (Tim) Weeks, Mark (Stefani) Gillen, Shawna (Aaron) Grier, Travis (Rachel) Gibson, John W. ( Theresa) Gibson, Garth (Nicole) Gibson, Josh (Mindy) Newberry and Angie (Ben) Bobzein; 19 Great grandchildren, Casey Crum, Joe Crum, Seth Weeks, Ethan Weeks, Henry Gibson, Everitt Gibson, Riley Newberry, Reed Newberry, Addison Gillen, Jackson Gillen, Lucy Bobzein, Norah Bobzein, Mary Gibson, John A. Gibson, William Gibson, Oliver Gibson, Samuel Gibson, Sophie Grier, and Grayson Grier.  Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother, Hugh McConnell, 3 sisters, Ruth Strand, Mildred Adair and Vera Garth; granddaughter, Jill Gibson.

A memorial service will be at 3:00 p.m., Saturday, April 26, 2014 at McGuire & Davies Funeral Home and Crematory in Monmouth with Rev. Ken Muck officiating.  Friends may call on Saturday at McGuire & Davies Funeral Home where her family will be present from 1:00-3:00 p.m.  Memorials may be given to Hospice Compassus, Monmouth Nursing Home or Faith United Presbyterian Church.
