Stevens, Henry, Jr.

Henry Stevens, Jr., 62, of Galesburg, passed away at 3:45 p.m. Wednesday, April 23, 2014 in OSF St. Mary Medical Center, Galesburg.

He was born February 25, 1952 in Chattanooga, Tenn. the son of Eddie Mae (Bradley) and Henry Stevens Sr.

Henry was reared and educated in Stockton, Ala. by his adopted family, Mama Annie; mother, Anna Robinson; sister, Mary Ann; and brother, Randall Robinson. Henry also lived for a time in New Jersey and Chicago.

He moved to Atlanta, Ga., where he attended Painter’s Trade School. He received his license as a professional painter. He worked for various contracting companies in Atlanta.

In 1979, Henry moved to Galesburg and married Janice Nix. He became a member of the International Brotherhood of Painters Union Local 502. Over the years, he worked for Johnson Contracting Company and Perdue Contracting Company until his retirement.

He was a member of New Home Missionary Baptist Church. Henry enjoyed the outdoors and working in his garden. He loved fishing and traveling and being amongst his family and friends. He will be greatly missed by all.

He is survived by one son, Matthew Henry Stevens of Phoenix, Ariz.; one grandson, Jordan Grant of Tucson, Ariz.; his step-mom, Barbara Stevens of New Jersey; his companion of 24 years and caregiver, Lillie Hayes of Galesburg; two sisters, Henrietta Stevens of Chattanooga and Tonya Stevens of New Jersey; four brothers, Isaac (and Patricia) Washington of Chattanooga, Charles Stevens of Dothan, Ala., Monroe Washington of Atlanta, and Arthur Stevens of New Jersey; his adopted family, Anna Robinson and Mary Ann Walker, both of Stockton and Randall Robinson of Atlanta; a special cousin, Curtis Miles of Chicago; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father; Mama Annie Robinson; grandma, Nellie Stevens; special aunt, Georgia Belisle; and three uncles, George Stevens, Noon Stevens, and Roland Bradley.

Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 3, 2014 at First Baptist Church followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m. Rev. Jerry Cato will officiate. Cremation will be accorded following the funeral. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
