Poshard Reflects on Time as SIU President

WGIL Newsroom . State News 202

CARBONDALE, Ill. (AP)–Former Illinois congressman Glenn Poshard  says he’s bittersweet now that he’s stepped down as the Southern Illinois University system’s president.

Poshard retired Wednesday but will stay on as a consultant to his successor, Randy Dunn, through June.

With three degrees from SIU, Poshard has been affiliated with the school for nearly 50 years.

He tells the  Southern Illinoisan the university is “a large part of the fabric of my life.” He says he’s grateful for the school.

Poshard was the Carbondale campus’ vice chancellor for administration for four years until 2003 and was a trustee before becoming the system’s president in 2006.

He says he’s proud the university maintains the lowest tuition and fees of any public university in Illinois. That’s even as state funding has decreased.
