The man who can be credited with getting the broadcasting license for the radio station that would one day become 92.7 FM the Laser has passed away. Harold “Bud” Bastian died Tuesday at the age of 85.
In 1975 Bastian became the Co-Owner and General manager of Creative Broadcasting, which ran WAIK-AM and WGBQ-FM Q-93 in Galesburg.
Galesburg Broadcasting Company’s Rick Heath worked for Bastian at WAIK and tells WGIL Bastian had a very creative vision for the station and didn’t wait to make some major changes.
“Converted it to a beautiful music format and really did a lot to improve the image of the radio station, did a lot to dress it up, with the ultimate plan of adding an FM station to it.”
Bastian was a member of the US Jaycees, Galesburg Rotary Club, Knox County United Way Hearing Commission, Galesburg Downtown Village Board as well as the Galesburg Chamber of Commerce.
He is survived by his wife Lois and sons Rob and Jamie.
A celebrations of life service and balloon release with military honors will be held at Lakeview Beach in Oak Run at 4 p-m this Saturday.
