A few baseball and softball games dot the area athletic schedule for today. Typically Wednesday is a light day for high school contests, and it’s a good thing with many of the area ball diamonds still being very wet from rains earlier in the week. Games on the baseball schedule include Abingdon/Avon hosting West Prairie. Coach Jeremy Pickerel’s Tornados improved to 13-11 with yesterday’s 10-to-1 win over Havana. Also, Galva/Williamsfield travels to Orion this afternoon. In softball action, ROWVA hosts North Fulton and A-Town will be tested by Brimfield/Elmwood.

The Galesburg Silver Streaks baseball team will resume it’s schedule tomorrow when they travel to Rock Island, before spending the weekend at the Metamora Classic.

College awards
Several area collegiate baseball players have been named to the Midwest Conference “All-Conference” team. Senior Eric Smoy of Knox is one of the 10 position players named to the South Division team. Smoy hit .349 with 49 runs-batted-in this past season. He also led the Prairie Fire with 53 hits, and had 11 stolen bases. It was the third straight year that Smoy has been named to the All-Conference team.

Monmouth College placed two players on the South Division team, including senior Ryan Crandall and freshman Austin Hardy.
