Sandburg Graduates Celebrate Accomplishment

WGIL Newsroom . Local News 306

A tradition at Carl Sandburg College saw hundreds of students receive both honors and their associate degrees, Thursday night.

The college’s 46th annual commencement ceremony was held at Galesburg High School and Sandburg President Dr. Lori Sundberg said graduating students should be proud of their accomplishment.

Despite the pomp and circumstance, invited speaker Chad Pregracke reaffirmed that “hard work” will help those graduating through their endeavors.

Pregracke is the founder and president of “Living Lands and Waters” – a nonprofit which focuses on the clean-up of the nation’s waterways.

He says that while he worked a job in the rivers prior to his journey, a lot has changed since then.

“Looking back, I’m not doing any of those things now, but they brought me to where I am today,” says Pregracke. “So my advice to you graduates is: try as many things as you can, while you can.”

Pregracke was named the 2013 CNN Hero of the Year for his efforts working on the Mississippi River through his non-profit.

Several faculty members were also recognized last night for reasons of retirement while others were honored for distinguished service.

Around 250 students graduated this spring. Sundberg says receiving a degree is not something everyone attains.
