A Galesburg man was pronounced dead in the early hours this morning after Galesburg Police were called to the 400 block of McClure Street.
Responding officers received a report of a one-vehicle accident and, once on scene, observed the vehicle had struck the railroad underpass. The passenger, identified as 23-year-old Albert Prater Jr., had to be extricated from the vehicle by the Galesburg Fire Department.
Responders were able to provide some treatment at the scene, but Prater was taken to Galesburg Cottage hospital.
According to a press release, Prater was pronounced dead by the Knox County Coroner this morning.
Police say the driver of the vehicle, 24-year-old Bryan Vann, had fled the scene of the accident. Investigators later found Vann in the 15-hundred block of McKnight Street where he was subsequently transported to Galesburg Cottage Hospital.
Vann was treated and released, but was arrested by police.
The crash remains under investigation, but Vann is facing charges of Driving Under the Influence, Reckless Homicide, Failure to Report an Accident Involving Death, and Operating an Uninsured Vehicle.
