Library Construction Grant Match Approved by State

WGIL Newsroom . Local News 270

Galesburg Public LibraryThe good news…the Galesburg Public Library is still in the running for a state grant that could pay for most of the building of a new Galesburg Public Library. The bad news…there’s still no money to be had.

The Galesburg Public Library learned yesterday that their $5 million in matching funds needed to pay for the match required for a state construction grant has been okayed by the state.  That money is primarily coming from debt certificates being purchased by the City and the library’s Foundation.

The library says in a press release that means the library remains in the cue at their current spot in case the remainder of the $20 million is provided by the state through the Fiscal Year 2015 Library Construction Program.

However, a letter sent to the library from Illinois State Library Director Anne Craig says there is still no money appropriated in the next fiscal year budget for such monies.  Lawmakers approved most of the state budget mechanisms this week in Springfield.

The library still wants to build a new facility on West Main Street, and is currently working through the property acquisition and demolition process to make that happen. A public meeting is scheduled for this coming Tuesday at 5pm at the current library, where the schematic design of the new library will be reviewed.
