Hertenstein, Carol A.

Carol A. Hertenstein, 78, of Galesburg, Ill. died 5:40 a.m. Thursday, May 22, 2014.

Carol was born on July 2, 1935 in Galesburg, the daughter of Earl Adams and Bertha Marie Lundeen Rich. She married Dean E. Hertenstein on September 10, 1955 in Galesburg. He preceded her in death on February 24, 2007.

She is survived by four daughters, Sherrie (and Ray) Riha, Jody Hertenstein, Ann (and Don) Glaze and Gail Babetch and six grandchildren, Rachel (and Nick), Nicole (and Dean), Jamie, Ashley, Carly and Austin and one great grandchild, Athan. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband and two brothers.

Carol grew up on North Broad Street and attended Silas Willard, Hitchcock Grade Schools and graduated from Galesburg High School in 1953. She attended classes at Knox College before her marriage to Dean.

Carol enjoyed volunteering for the Galesburg Jaycettes, League of Women Voters and the American Red Cross. She served as President for the Cottage Hospital Service Guild and also was an ambassador for the Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Republican Women’s Association.

After her daughters left for college, Carol joined the family business of Hertenstein Loan Company, then worked for Barash & Stoerzbach. She and Dean later opened Office Equipment Company. Soon after she started her own business, Personally Yours, on Main St.

In retirement she participated in P.E.O. and the Altrusa Club and was a member of the First United Methodist Church. She loved to spend time with her family and dear friends, golfing, playing bridge, gardening and working part-time at Bergner’s.

Visitation will be 4-6 p.m. Friday, May 23, 2014 at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. A memorial service will then be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 24, 2014 at the chapel.
