Ill. Fire Marshal Urges Safety Over Memorial Day

WGIL Newsroom . State News 154

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP)–State officials want Illinois residents to follow outdoor fire safety precautions during Memorial Day weekend and the following summer months.
The Office of the State Fire Marshal released tips on Friday for those hoping to get outside and grill or go on camping trips.

Officials have reported more than 200 uncontrolled campsite fires between 2005 and 2012. They say many could have been avoided by following certain measures.
Fire officials say campers should never leave fires unattended or pick a site less than 15 feet from tents, shrubs or flammable materials. Campers should also set up fires downwind from the camp sleeping area and ensure fires are extinguished before going to sleep.

Additionally, campers should have a pail of water, fire extinguisher or shovel nearby to put out fires.
