Identity of Body in Burned School Still Unknown

WGIL Newsroom . State News 413

FARMINGTON, Ill. (AP) — Authorities are still working to identify a man whose body was discovered in an old central Illinois school two weeks after the building burned down.

An autopsy determined the preliminary cause of death to be smoke inhalation, indicating the man was inside Farmington’s Old School Center during the May 15 blaze.

Police Chief Carl Powell tells Gatehouse Media investigators have yet to determine the cause of the fire.

Police and fire personnel removed debris to uncover the body on Thursday after the building’s owner contacted them about a foul odor on the third floor.

Powell says his department had no reports of anyone missing in the area.
