The Galesburg School District is making a last-minute change to the new Galesburg High School athletic fieldhouse almost ready to open.
The District-205 Board Building Committee has okayed a change in plans for the fieldhouse, that would essentially make a cardio workout room in the fieldhouse bigger, while making a walkway bounded on one side by floor-to-ceiling glass slightly narrower.
District-205 Assistant Superintendent for Finance and Operations David Black says since the room would also be used for fundraising and other purposes, changing the size would be a huge help.
“One of the main reasons I heard for this cardio room and the beautiful view and the glass was so that we could basically rent that space out and raise money with it during games, etc.,” says Black. “But it’s far too small.”
Black says what’s more, only five cardio machines can fit in the space — and for the high school’s purposes, that’s just “silly.”
The space as it is now is roughly half what was originally planned, due to what board members called “value engineering.”
