District 202 invited the public to tour the soon to be former Knoxville High School building one last time. The school will be torn down and replaced with a newly constructed building behind the old school.
A line was started out the door prior to the school’s opening at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
Blanche Mummey graduated from Knoxville High School in 1960. She tells WGIL the building seemed much bigger when she was a student.
“Since I did graduate from Knoxville, I wanted one last look just to see what it looked like now and it’s a kind of nostalgia,” says Mummey.
Many graduates were able to get back in touch with former classmates and share stories of their time in the building. District 202 Superintendent Steve Wilder tells WGIL the memories are the biggest part of the tour.
“There’s a lot of emotional attachment,” says Wilder. “It’s a small community and schools are the center of communities so it’s really one last opportunity to walk the halls.”
Pictures of the new Knoxville High School were on display for viewing by the public.
