Illinois’ World War II Memorial Site of D-Day Ceremony

WGIL Newsroom . State News 215

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — The Illinois World War II Memorial in Springfield will be the site of a ceremony marking the anniversary of D-Day.

The Illinois Historic Preservation Agency announced Tuesday the event is scheduled for Friday, June 6 at noon. The event will include re-enactors in World War II uniforms, patriotic music and a rifle salute.

It’s the 70th anniversary of the allied invasion of France during World War II in 1944. On that June day, hundreds of thousands of American, British and other allied forces landed on the shores of France to launch the largest seaborne invasion in history.

The ceremony is sponsored by the World War II Illinois Veterans Memorial Committee. The Illinois World War II Memorial is located in Springfield’s Oak Ridge Cemetery.
