Galesburg police initially said yesterday morning there was no accident involving a man and a train, and as it turns out, that’s partially true.
Authorities say it may have been a prior train that struck a man instead.
Galesburg Police reports indicate officers responded to the railroad tracks near Prairie and Water Streets around 5:30 a.m., after being flagged down by Burlington Northern Santa Fe employees in an eastbound train.
Officers say that crew was informed by a westbound train that there was a man on the tracks, and were able to stop in time.
Investigators believe that an earlier eastbound train struck a man identified as 23-year-old Adam Coffman of Missouri, thinking it might have hit some debris instead. They believe Coffman was sleeping at the time of the incident, and was taken to Galesburg Cottage Hospital for treatment of his injuries. Coffman, however, didn’t talk to investigators, as they say he was too intoxicated at the time.
Coffman was ticketed for Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and Trespassing on Railroad Property.
