Shanley, Donald M.

Mr. Donald M. “Don-Don” Shanley, 72, of Galesburg, Ill. died 6:30 p.m. Thursday, June 12, 2014 at OSF St. Mary Medical Center, Galesburg.

He was born August 16, 1941 in Galesburg to James C. and Dorothy Hoffman Shanley. He married Sharon L. Chasteen August 16, 1988 in Dothan, Ala. She Survives.

Also surviving is a daughter, Nancy (and Clyde) Barker of Antelope, Calif., a step-son, Eric (and Sharon) Heiden of Galesburg and five grandchildren, William, Peter, Gabriella, Stephanie and Peyton. He was preceded in death by his father and mother and step-father, “Slim” Sutherland, two brothers, Kenny Shanley and Jim Shanley and a sister, Sandy Shanley.

Don served in the United States Army as a military police officer and then a chief warrant officer-3 for 20 years and retired in 1981. He then was a criminal investigator for the Rock Island Arsenal for 23 years and retired in 2005. He served in Vietnam and received three Bronze Stars, the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, the Good Conduct Medal and several other awards. He was a member of the Harry E. Wiles American Legion Post # 381 in Abingdon, the V.F.W. post 2257 in Galesburg and C.I.D.A.A. He was raised in San Diego, Calif. by his mother and step-father and graduated from San Diego High School in 1959. Don enjoyed bowling, fishing and camping. He loved his dog Barkley. He was an avid Chicago Cubs and Bears fan.

Funeral service will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 17, 2014 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Rev. Jim Ecklund will officiate. Visitation will be 5:00 to7:00 p.m. Monday, June 16, 2014 at the chapel. Burial will be in East Linwood Cemetery, Galesburg with military rites by the Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post # 285.
