UPDATED 8:46am 6/18/14 A McDonough County man is dead, and a Monmouth man has been ticketed, following an accident involving a truck and a farm vehicle in McDonough County yesterday.
State Police in Macomb say troopers and McDonough County officials responded to U.S. 67 around 4:30 yesterday afternoon.
They say 86-year-old Robert Goodpasture of Good Hope was driving a utility tractor pulling a rotary hay rake along 67 near County Road 1800 North when it collided with a vehicle driven by 48-year-old Donald Hawkins of Monmouth. Troopers believe Hawkins was distracted and didn’t see Goodpasture’s vehicle until it was almost too late.
They say the impact whenr Hawkins swerved and struck the hay rake, caused Goodpasture to be ejected, after the tractor, in their words, swerved violently.
Goodpasture was taken by helicopter to an unidentified Peoria Hospital, with what troopers say were severe injuries, and later was pronounced dead there.
Hawkins was ticketed for Failure to Reduce Speed to Avoid an Accident. Neither he nor his two passengers were injured.
