Chicago, AFSCME Reach Tentative 5-year Contract

CHICAGO (AP) — The city of Chicago and the state’s largest public employees union have agreed on a tentative five-year contract.

No details on the deal were released by either the city or the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees Council 31.

In a joint statement Thursday, Mayor Rahm Emanuel called it “a balanced and responsible deal for taxpayers” and AFSCME members.

In Chicago, the union represents more than 3,400 employees working in city libraries, police precincts, health clinics and other locations.

Negotiations lasted more than two years.

The agreement is retroactive to July 1, 2012, and runs until June 30, 2017.
