Bates, Virginia L.

Virginia L. “Ginnie” Bates, age 89 of Abingdon, died at 4:35 pm Thursday, June 19, 2014 at the Care Center of Abingdon.

She was born September 15, 1924 in Knox County, the daughter of W. R. and Elva Pearl (Miller) McDermet. She married Forrest E. “Forrie” Bates on September 3, 1947 in Abingdon. He preceded her in death on March 9, 2001. She was also preceded in death by her parents, one daughter, Connie J. Mason, one brother, one sister and one great-grandson.

Virginia is survived by one daughter, Sallie (and Ed) Schulthes of rural London Mills; nine grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her loving dog, Missy and good friend, Harry Batson.

She had lived in Abingdon most of her life. She graduated from Abingdon High School. She had worked at the Abingdon Pottery, the American Sanitary Manufacturing Company in Abingdon, Sears in Galesburg, and also Elsie’s Style Shop in Abingdon. She was a member of the Christian Church in Abingdon. She was also a member of the American Legion Post #381 Auxiliary.

Graveside service will be held at 11:00 am Monday, June 23, 2014 at the Abingdon Cemetery. Rev. Darryl McDaniel will officiate. There will be no visitation. Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
