Bishop Hill Celebrates Summer with Music Festival

WGIL Newsroom . Local News 190

Summer music festivals are the norm this time of year, but Swedish summer music festivals might be a lesser known tradition.

This weekend, the Bishop Hill Heritage Association is hosting the Midsommar Musical Festival with a number of musical performances.

Bishop Hill Administrator Todd DeDecker says the all day event is free and open to the public and he tells WGIL the festival is molded after a traditional Swedish holiday.

“It’s actually a national holiday for Sweden where they celebrate the beginning of summer and the end of winter with music, dancing, and food,” says DeDecker. “Here in Bishop Hill, we were started as a Swedish colony, so we wanted to do something to celebrate Midsommer, so we focused on the music.”

Some of the bands featured include the Bear Clan of Sweden and Black Hawk Pipes and Drums. DeDecker says when the music portion of the festival is finished, everyone is invited to decorate and dance around the Maypole.

There will also be a barn dance that evening at the Colony School to help close out the Midsommar celebration.
