One closure is already underway, but by the time Galesburg’s Railroad Days gets into full swing this weekend, traveling through downtown Galesburg will once again be difficult, but this time in a different way.
If you’ve driven through downtown Galesburg, you no doubt have seen that the road around the Public Square is closed for the Railroad Days Carnival — an area that Public Works Director Larry Cox says actually provides for more space for rides and concessions than along Simmons Street between Prairie and Kellogg.
Cox tells the WGIL Morning News, however, the road closures get more complicated Saturday, when other Railroad Days activities take over a very busy street.
“On Saturday morning early, we will be closing Main Street, basically from Seminary Street to the square,” says Cox. “There will be some gaps so you can get across on the side streets like Cherry and Prairie, but it will be set-up so they can have games on Saturday and then also on Sunday.”
Cox says, however, once the banks close Saturday around noon, the side-streets will then be closed. Detour signs will be posted, and Cox says they’ll likely remain in place until late Sunday night.
Organizers say with things like three-on-three basketball and other activities returning, they hope the use of Main Street will make the 37th Railroad Days a success.
