Knoxville Kicks-off Independence Day

Knoxville5KIt may have been early in Knoxville, but that didn’t stop dozens of participants from coming out to the Knoxville Sports Complex.

The City of Knoxville was looking for an activity for residents during the 4th of July holiday. That prompted the Knoxville Action Committee three years ago to host events throughout the day.

They settled this year on a 5K and one-mile Fun Run, as well as a 50 yard dash for the kids.

Race Organizer Stephanie Dixon tells WGIL they’re continuing to build their turnout for the races.

“I think it’s really important we have lots and lots of runners in our community that enjoy coming out,” says Dixon. “It’s a great way to start your Fourth of July.”

Volunteers say the races are a great way to get the community involved and to promote the health of residents.

Joseph Stewart, who will be a Junior at Galesburg High School this fall, was declared the winner of the 5K race. He says he had just started training for the fall sports.

“I just started cross-country training and actually I was out here for a work-out yesterday with the Galesburg track club so I afraid I might be a little tired, but the pace was pretty slow for the first two miles so I was good to go for the last 800,” says Stewart.

Proceeds from the race will be put toward the purchase of fireworks at the Knoxville Independence Day show.
